Advent Wreath Lighting

Week 1:

A reading from the Gospel of John: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Verse 1 of “Choose to Hope” by Marty Haugen

Let us pray: God of hope and love, like the light of this first advent candle, may we shine forth with love towards you and towards others. Open our eyes to see your image in our neighbors and serve you by serving them. We pray this is in the hope, and expectation, of the in-breaking of your kingdom into our lives. Amen.

Week 2:

A reading from the Gospel of John: “He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.”

Verse 2 of “Choose to Hope” by Marty Haugen

Let us pray: God our Father, as the flame is not diminished when it is shared from one candle to two, may we share the light of your love with our sisters and brothers. Strengthen our witness that the body of Christ may grow and your light might overcome all the darkness of the world. We pray this in the name of Christ, the one who desires to bring all into the family of God. Amen.

Week 3:

A reading from the Gospel of John: “Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Let us pray: In-dwelling God, as the darkness is overcome by ever more and more light, increase your light within us. Make us people of your light and forgiveness and move us to actions of mercy and justice. We pray this, trusting in the source of all light, Jesus Christ our Redeemer and Lord. Amen.

Week 4:

A reading from the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”

Let us pray: God-with-us, source of all hope and light, increase our faith in you and overcome all darkness within us. Help us to understand that our identity is grounded in you; and work your will and your word in us and through us. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who was, and is, and is to come. Amen.

God of mercy and healing, you who hear the cries of those in need, receive these petitions of your people that all who are troubled may know peace, comfort, and courage.

A brief silence.

Anointing God, send your spirit upon your church and its leaders that we may better live out and proclaim your grace and mercy for all the earth. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Shepherding God, as the seasons change and nature here in the north prepares for winter slumber provide the sustenance it needs for the coming months of rest. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Appointing God, make our leaders mindful of your power and presence in the world that they might serve with humility and justice for the betterment of all. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Naming God, ground us in our identities as your blessed and beloved children that our lives may reflect your peace and grace. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Healing God, be with all who suffer this day (especially,…), that they might know the power of your healing love. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
